diablo pollo fui un karny durante un verano. el segundo verano ya no soporté. i was a carnie one summer. the second summer, i couldn’t take it anymore.

Translator’s Note the summer diablo pollo was a carnie, they asked julcia to translate some phrases for them. this project combines the voice memo translations she sent them with the photos they sent her. as the fair moved from town to town, julcia translated the words diablo pollo wanted. diablo pollo doesn’t know how to speak English.

memories/descriptions: 

1. fue una de las primeras partes que vimos de un juego. si de ese tamaño es una tuerca de un juego, imagínate el juego completo. eso tendríamos que armar y desarmar durante 5 meses. this was one of the first pieces that we ever saw of a ride. if this was the size of just one nut, imagine the entire ride. we would have to assemble and disassemble these for 5 months.
2. conocimos a tommy. vendió mota a los que fumaban porque allí no había nada al rededor y nos contó que acababan de violar a su hija. detenía una parte del juego para ensamblarla, esa parte del juego algunas semanas después le rompería la cabeza. we met tommy. he sold weed to the guys who smoked because there was nothing else around. he told us that his daughter had just been raped. in this photo, he’s putting together one of the parts of a ride, a few weeks later that same piece would fall and break his head. 
3. the superman ride: el juego más buscado por los jóvenes curiosamente lo operaba el único señor negro y con más estilo de la feria, era fanático de selena, cantaba la canción de ¨como la flor.” The superman ride was the ride all the kids came looking for, interestingly run by the only black man at the fair with more style than anyone else. he was a fan of selena and would sing “como la flor” 
4. se terminó de pintar el superman. descubrimos esa mancha pero no la pintaron se fue así toda la temporada. entonces se le decía sperman. After we finished painting the superman, we found this white stain but no one painted over it. it stayed like that all season. so we called it sperman. 
5. cada domingo pizza gratis después de montar la feria hasta 17 horas montando y desmontando. every sunday, free pizza after 17 hours of taking down and setting up the fair. 
6. la casa de los espantos y ese era el rostro del primer operador de esa casa de los espantos. the house of horrors, this was the face of the first operator of that house of horrors. 
7. el mecánico de toda la feria, sin dientes, con diabetes, pero de pie. the fair’s mechanic, without teeth, with diabetes, but standing. 
8. después de una semana de trabajo aún usaba los mismos pantalones. pants after a week of work.
9. papá de tommy con cáncer en los testículos, se los retiraron pero seguía jugando. tommy’s dad had cancer in his testicles, they removed them, but that didn’t stop him from playing. 
10. la encontré cuando iba camino a dollar general, nadie caminaba allá. esa serpiente podría ser yo. Mountain Dew la pop de los karnys por antonomasia. i found this when i was walking to dollar general, nobody walked that way. this snake could be me. Mountain Dew, the carnie sodapop par excellence.
11. cara de cocodrilo: esa tortuga era mi totem, estaba justo a lado de mi juego, siempre que me desesperaba la volteaba a ver para regresar a mí. the turtle was my totem, it was the ride right next to mine. whenever i felt despair, I would look over at it to come back to myself.
12. tomé esa foto justo cuando me dijo el jefe que: “me iba a ir al infierno” y se empezó a reír, ya saben cómo (como satanás) porque me iba a cambiar de juego ahora iba yo a operar el INFERNO. I took this photo right after my boss told me “you’re going to hell” and started laughing like (you guessed it) satan because he was changing my position, I would start operating the INFERNO.
