Two Poems

This is the name
(liquid gold)
This is the name we give to earth’s
hardest fruit. Liquid moan from the soil that chills
our sore and weary fingertips to later open lips
in bitter aftertastes of sun and flame. This is
the name of winter contradictions, trees of
ice, of the dryness of leaves frozen from
within.
Thus the warm shadow of a greater force
dawns in the mouth.
Este é o nome
(ouro líquido)
Este é o nome que damos ao fruto mais duro
do chão. Gemido líquido da terra que nos arrefece
na ponta dos dedos doridos e cansados para depois
se abrir aos lábios em travos de sol e lume. Este é
o nome das contradições de inverno, das árvores
de gelo, da secura das folhas engelhadas do lado
de dentro.
Assim amanhece na boca a sombra quente
de uma força maior.
There are no safe places
We are still not safe.
Not from the world’s perils,
nor from the delays of patience.
There are no safe places to store
mistakes. Nor enough anchors
for the drag of solitude.
We are no longer on earth. There is neither
coast nor lighthouse. And we are too fragile
for so much sea. For so much abyss.
For so much.
We are still not safe.
Not from inevitable things
Nor from the serious and obvious ones.
There are no safe places in this world.
Não há lugares seguros
Não estamos a salvo, ainda.
Nem dos desfazeres do mundo,
nem dos atrasos da paciência.
Não há lugares seguros onde guardar
equívocos. Nem âncoras que bastem
ao arrasto da solidão.
Não estamos ainda em terra. Não há
farol nem costa. E somos frágeis demais
para tanto mar. Para tanto abismo.
Para tanto.
Não estamos a salvo ainda.
Nem das coisas inevitáveis
Nem das coisas sérias e óbvias.
Não há lugares seguros neste mundo.
