Maria Titan was born in South Africa and is currently living in Cyprus. She holds a BA degree in Fine Art from the University of the Witwatersrand. A mixed-media artist, she paints primarily in acrylic, pastel, watercolor, and marker, experimenting with varnish and resin to add different dimensions to the work. She paints from photographs, manipulating images to create a new narrative. Her work often tells a story and can be described as bold and expressive with a heavy focus on color. Several of her works have been published in art publications and her collectors are based both locally

Artists’s Statement:
“Girl on Fire” is part of my series of women with either birds or butterflies. It was painted from a photo where I added butterflies and manipulated the light. Her pose is confident and expressive, signifying freedom and elation. It was painted on watercolor paper in mixed media. The colors are rich and expressive, matching the mood of the woman.
